As Chairman of Urban Design Associates, Rob is all about understanding people and their connection to the places where they live. His sources of inspiration for urban design comes from the stories – the memories, traditions and aspirations of the people of a region. Rob pioneered the use of extensively-researched Pattern Books to be able to build on the unique character of a region, the inherited landscape, and the distinctive qualities of an existing city, town or village – a number of them historic landmarks. Under his leadership at UDA, the firm has developed a broader national and international practice working with clients to reclaim urban districts and waterfronts, develop conservation-based settlements in sensitive landscape settings, as well as designing new towns and villages worldwide.

Rob lives in Pittsburgh and enjoys hiking and photographing beautiful landscapes and places.

Derek is a principal and lead urban designer at PWL Partnership with nearly 20 years of experience across North America, Asia, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East. Serving as the creative lead on design teams at PWL, Derek focuses on innovative placemaking and restorative urbanism with a view to improving people’s overall health and quality of life. Derek’s infectious approach to his work is apparent in both large-scale master plans and urban waterfront developments as well as in the finite custom details that celebrate a site’s unique character. His ability to quickly translate raw ideas into graphic form means he’s able to bring imagination to life for the viewer.

Derek has always appreciated our region’s unique relationship between the urban and natural landscape. So he enjoys the 20-minute escape to the North Shore with an abundance of hiking and snowboarding. Derek also enjoys road cycling throughout the Pacific Northwest.
